Toi, moi, Tituba...

Marseille
Dorothée Munyaneza: Toi, moi, Tituba | @Dayana Lothert

With «Toi, moi, Tituba…» Dorothée Munyaneza turns her focus to those bodies and voices that were erased and forgotten through the systems of colonialism and slavery. The Rwandan-multinational artist traces the lingering marks of this colonial violence in a haunting solo performance that combines vocals, sound and dance between light and shadow, to create an unforgettable homage to those forgotten in history.

«Toi, moi, Tituba…» devotes both body and spirit to the remembrance of all those existences and identities, all those bodies and voices, brutally destroyed and erased through colonialism and slavery. The Rwandan, multinational artist Dorothée Munyaneza explores the enduring scars of colonial violence in a haunting, «choral» solo and creates an unforgettable tribute to those lost to history.

Inspired by Maryse Condé’s novel «I, Tituba: Black Witch of Salem» (1986) and Elsa Dorlin’s philosophical text in reference to it, Dorothée Munyaneza lends her own body to the historical figure of Tituba, an enslaved woman accused of witchcraft in 1692. Through her embodiment of Tituba as a living archive, the figure’s legacy becomes palpably present on stage, alongside all those whose lives were cruelly claimed by colonialism, patriarchy, and slavery.

Bathed in the stark contrast of neon lights and shadows, and immersed in the electroacoustic live sound of Khyam Allami, Dorothée Munyaneza takes to the stage in a powerful act of artistic resistance against oppression. Blending language, song, and dance, «Toi, moi, Tituba…» becomes a resonant call to resist collective forgetting: We must confront the brutal truths of the past to pavethe way for genuine, collective healing.
