Workshop Why do we need festivals at all?
European festivals emerged in post-catastrophic times, serving as spaces for rebuilding torn social relations within the postwar landscape. In the current times, when the social order as we knew it is crumbling and the new one has yet to take shape, it feels crucial to rethink the very model of the festival again and ask: why do we need festivals at all? What role can they actually play in contemporary society? How can they become spaces that invite new social imaginaries to emerge and rehearse social gatherings otherwise?
During the workshops, we have invited curators whose work is driven by experimentation and imagining more hospitable and just institutions. In three working groups we will attempt at developing practical tools: spells, scores, and recipes, for curating festivals in ways that activate their transformative potential.
Sunday, August 23, 10 am–1 pm
Further information will be provided upon registration.
Networking Brunch Sunday, August 23, 1–3 pm, Rote Fabrik, Restaurant Ziegel Oh Lac
Following the workshop, a brunch will be held for all workshop participants and attendees of the Professionals’ Weekend.
