BREL
Brussels«BREL» is a choreographic encounter across generations: the grande dame of dance, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and the rising dancer and choreographer Solal Mariotte share the stage—two generations, two bodies, one open question. The starting point is the songs of Jacques Brel. Not a tribute, but a compelling experiment in how to share the stage with Jacques Brel without embodying him. A work about temporal displacements, performativity, and the question of how we listen today—with the body.

How do we transform a myth when we step into it anew today? In their first joint work, choreographer and European dance grande dame Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and dancer-choreographer Solal Mariotte share the stage—two generations, two bodies, one open question, and: the songs of Jacques Brel. Projections, music, and movement create a layered, associative universe of images and memories, where closeness and distance, past and present, intertwine.
Jacques Brel is known for his poetic and political lyrics and an energy that affected his audience directly and physically. But how does Brel’s work resonate today? Mariotte’s breakdance and acrobatics meet De Keersmaeker’s precise choreographic signature in a search for voice, time, and presence.
«BREL» is not a tribute but an experimental setup: how can one share the stage with Jacques Brel without embodying him? Inspired by the complexities of his life and work, the piece explores the shifts that emerge when we engage with him today, as well as the profound emotions he continues to evoke.
