Calixto Neto
Bruits Marrons
ParisAround a black piano, bodies, music and light intertwine in an abstract space, giving rise to personal stories about everyday experiences of racism. The performers share intimate stories in which vulnerability, resistance and collective solidarity take shape. Brazilian choreographer Calixto Neto returns to the Zürcher Theater Spektakel with «Bruits Marrons», a subtle tribute to composer Julius Eastman. The piece offers an insight into the many voices and realities of Black queer life – as lived presence and collective strength.

Around a black piano, an abstract space emerges – centring Afrodiasporic perspectives within a European context. In an intimate scene, the performers share stories from their everyday lives – encounters with subtle and overt forms of racism. These are narratives of both personal and structural experiences, quiet yet insistent.
Language, light, dance and music inter-twine as the performers bring Black queer pasts, presents and futures into view – a shimmering, almost invisible yet palpable web. Complexities become visible. Vulnerability meets selfassertion, fatigue meets resistance.
The Europe-based Brazilian choreographer Calixto Neto returns to the Zürcher Theater Spektakel, where he presented his dance solo «oh!rage» in 2019 as part of the Short Pieces programme.
As a subtle tribute to the life of minimalist artist Julius Eastman, shaped by racist and homophobic exclusion, «Bruits Marrons» brings together multiple voices and bodies to form a multilayered constellation of Black queer experiences.
