A sign in the wind. A sign of the times. Spanish artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo is a master of political imagery, working along the fault lines ofpolitical symbolism. His works shift familiar signs, strip monuments of their meaning and explore how power shapes images, gestures and collective imagination.
For the Zürcher Theater Spektakel, Sánchez Castillo creates a large-scale public intervention. A monumental object meets the forces of the wind, turning the sky above the Landiwiese into a space of political resonance. The material stretches, collapses, rises up and resists any fixed form. Like a blank page, the sky briefly opens up new possibilities of being together – a fragile choreography between resistance and surrender.
With «WHITE FLAG», Sánchez Castillo turns to symbols that seem universally understood and yet remain politically charged. His work combines sculpture, performance and public intervention, while also referring to the history of international humanitarian law and Switzerland’s role as a place of international diplomacy. At the same time, the work raises questions about international responsibility in a time of global wars.
