The 46th Zürcher Theater Spektakel kicks off with a line-up of international artists whose work explores our relationship with nature and the environment. Through compelling imagery, they address some of the most urgent questions of our time. Their performances open windows onto the world, telling stories of empathy and beauty, of crisis and resistance – and of the contradictions of the human condition.
These themes are explored with particular poignancy by the Catalan-French company Baro d’evel in their breathtaking visual journey «Qui Som?». Who are we – and how can we rediscover joy in a world shaped by crisis and catastrophe? Director and conjurer of atmospheres Philippe Quesne brings a band of endearing scarecrows to life in «Farm Fatale» – wryly dreaming and singing of a better future amid turbo cows and vanishing insects. At the heart of Dorothée Munyaneza’s choreography is the Umuko tree – a traditional social and cultural gathering point in Rwandan villages. And in «Tapajós», Brazilian theatre maker Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha turns her gaze to the wounded river landscapes of the Amazon, forging an artistic alliance with the resistance of Indigenous women and mothers.
