Questions for a Fairer World
The examination of inequality and justice runs through several projects in this year’s festival programme. For the Chilean-Mexican-Austrian artist Amanda Piña, mountains are living beings. In her multi-part project School of Mountains and Water, based on her many years of research on the decolonisation of landscapes, she questions the Western duality of man and nature and places indigenous knowledge at the centre. The installations by Plastique Fantastique and Border Forensics on the festival grounds appeal to different senses and draw attention to the criminalisation of migration. Moldovan theatre-maker Nicoleta Esinencu uses music and performance to examine the violent conditions to which migrant workers are exposed. Vanessa E. Thompson also talks about unjust border regimes as part of the Talking on Water lecture series. At the Stammtisch, various encounters will take place, focussing on issues of inequality and overcoming borders together. The Brazilian artist Renata Carvalho also talks about breaking through borders and norms in her performance Manifesto Transpofágico. She speaks openly about a physical transition and about the complex and ephemeral choreography of identity constructions. The Indian artist Mallika Taneja raises her voice on behalf of all women in her country who are made invisible and are silenced due to structural inequality. The group gemeinsam bauen wir neu also addresses structural exclusion in their multi-part project and demands more voice and recognition for Finta+ people in craft professions.
