Freedom, chaos, community – a mixture of which characterises this vibrant dance evening from Brazil from the very first second. Choreographer Alice Ripoll has been working with the dance company Suave since 2014. Over these ten years, the life stories of the dancers have become intertwined not only with each other, but also with the history of their country.
«Zona Franca» stands first and foremost for a free dance zone. There is room for theatre, voice and an exuberant mix of dancestyles, such as passinho, Afro dance, Afrohouse, sabala, pisadinha and brega funk. The dancers have learnt and developed these styles, from each other, on the street and from TikTok.
The piece was created in a transitional period: the time between the presidencies of Bolsonaro and Lula da Silva,between coronavirus restrictions and new-found freedoms. A time of enduring, holding one’s breath – and still: dancing. Instead of fearing it, «Zona Franca» celebrates change, sometimes in trembling and questioning ways, but always with all the transformative power that the future can unleash. «Zona Franca» opens up a space of possibility that becomes aplayground. Balloons fly and burst in this wild and glittering space that fully utilises everything available. (fa)

Public Warm Up
Communal warm-up on the Landiwiese, led by dancers from «Zona Franca» on Sat 17.8. & Sun 18.8., both 6:00-6:30 hrs. Free of charge, no registration necessary.
Collaboration
The guest performance takes place - also for reasons of sustainability - in collaboration with the Theaterfestival Basel.
