Arooj Aftab

Lahore, New York

The transcendent sounds of composer and singer Arooj Aftab give hope that acceptance and even beauty can arise from moments of sadness and despair. Her musical sovereignty is a builder of bridges between different worlds. In 2021, the composer, who was born in Riyadh to Pakistani parents and now lives in the USA, released the album «Vulture Prince», with which she came to terms with the early death of her younger brother.

In times of personal and collective crisis, Arooj Aftab turns to music, which manifests itself as an organic blend of the most diverse influences from her own biography. With gentle intensity, Aftab sings primarily in Urdu and draws on classical Hindustani music as well as jazz and classical music, which are also part of the artist’s repertoire thanks to her training at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. With the intimacy of an adept, Arooj Aftab blends these traditions into a truly global work, for which she was the first Pakistani artist to be awarded a Grammy in 2022.

Arooj Aftab’s concert at this year’s Zürcher Theater Spektakel, in which she will be supported by harp and double bass, provides an accessible way to experience the complexity of this artist’s biography. (mn)
