Mikado, small tales of falling

What would a good game of Mikado be without the inevitable collapse of the stick installation? Exactly: not a Mikado. And so it is entirely logical that «Mikado, small tales of falling», the latest work by the performers of Collectif Sous le Manteau, tells of the possibility of the demise of the existing. In this dizzying, exciting performance, they work with fragile yet stable poles that originally come from Chinese acrobatics.

«Mikado» tells the story of a competition of ideas, in which the protagonists compete in more or less successful ways. Boundaries are tested, physical demands are acted out – and ultimately, despite its overwhelming virtuoso physicality, this show also conveys a lot about being human and about the contexts in which we all live, about community and the fragility of empathy. The performers come from Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway, the Netherlands and Portugal – and so it is certainly appropriate to think about Europe while enjoying their acrobatic feats – and perhaps even about how this construct could be improved in the future. Simple words

This is a circus piece with lots of acrobatics.

It is called Mikado, like the sticks game.

Just as in Mikado, the acrobats try to prevent everything from collapsing.

They move on long wooden sticks on the stage.

This is very exciting to watch.
