Birdboy
CarlowFor children and families
A rather damaged car is parked in the middle of nowhere. In it, a young man brushes his teeth while singing along loudly to every song on the radio. There is no-one else there, absolute solitude. But little by little, brightly-lit beings approach the scene. They hover in the air like ghosts and become more and more numerous. Who are they? What do they want?

In collaboration with dancer Kévin Coquelard, Irish choreographer Emma Martin embarks on an imaginative journey through the inner life of an adolescent. Completely on his own, Birdboy gyrates and staggers around the wrecked car that seems to have become his home – and lets us witness how his worries and fears, but also hopes and desires, come to life.
«Birdboy» is Emma Martin’s first dance piece that she has developed especially for a young audience. Inspired by her daughter Rudi and her world view, the choreographer looked for forms of expression similar to children’s comic books. Eccentrically, poetically and exuberantly, the protagonist’s emotional rollercoaster rides spill over into the audience’s space. This entertaining mixture of music, dance and atmospheric images is a tribute to all those who don’t quite seem to fit in. (af)
