Hagay Dreaming Exhibition

Hualien

An old legend of the indigenous Truku tribe in Taiwan tells of a hunter who was surprised by a sudden downpour while hunting. The hunter found shelter in a tree hollow and fell into a deep sleep. In his dream, he encountered a group of fluid spirits, neither male nor female, who called themselves «Hagay». They imparted knowledge of rituals, hunting and weaving to the hunter. The hunter woke up, went back to his village and shared the Hagay’s knowledge with his fellow men.

Multimedia artist Shu Lea Cheang and Dondon Hounwn, artist and practising shaman of the Truku tribe, have created an artificial universe based on this partly traditional, partly invented narrative. In three different formats – a performance, a textile installation and a multimedia exhibition – the two collaborators explore the connections between queer lifestyles, shamanism and contemporary technology.

«Hagay Dreaming Exhibition»

The exhibition will take place in the Shedhalle and traces and continues the process of the performance «Living Gaya Dreaming Hagay». On show will be the video work «Hagay» by Dondon Hounwn, as well as video documentations of previous performances. The «Hagay Dreaming Exhibition» can be seen until the end of the festival and marks the transition to the next ProtoZone of the Shedhalle this autumn, an exhibition format for process-based art.

«Hagay Dreaming Performance»

Of course, you shouldn't miss the accompanying performance, a musical journey to the diversity of the sexes in their original state, in which futuristic laser choreographies meet shamanistic dances.

«Hagay Dreaming Cave»

A textile installation, reminiscent of a cave, invites visitors gather and learn about the traditional crafmanship of the fictional Hagay people.

Simple words

«Living Gaya Dreaming Hagay» is an art project in three parts.

The «Hagay Dreaming Cave» takes place outdoors on the Landiwiese.

It is an installation made of woven cords that looks like a cave.

Inside, you can weave together with the artists, and listen to their stories.

If you want, you can bring an old sweater.

It will then be cut up and turned into new yarn.
