Soap&Skin

Vienna

The artist Soap&Skin wears her heart on her sleeve. Her moving, often classically-instrumented pop ballads revolve around the great themes of life. These include the interpretation of what «home» can mean, as well as reflections on love or loss. Steeped in experimental music, she interweaves piano melodies with electronically synthesised sounds, which often form the atmospheric basis of her compositions.

Soap&Skin, whose real name is Anja Plaschg and who left rural Austria at the age of 16 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, makes music that invites introspection. And which she brings to the stage with an ensemble of string and wind players. Since 2009, she has released three albums (a fourth will appear soon) and has collaborated with artists, such as Florentina Holzinger, Jette Steckel and Tocotronic. This is one indication that she feels comfortable in a wide variety of artistic contexts. Another is her work as an actress, most recently in the historical drama «Des Teufels Bad». This Austrian film, for which she also composed the soundtrack, had its premiere at this year’s Berlinale. All those projects add up to a varied oeuvre in which the artist’s personal signature is always recognisable. (mn)
