The Nest Collective

Return to Sender

Nairobi

«Return to Sender». When something is returned, something is usually wrong – in this case, perhaps more than we realise at first glance. The Nest Collective's installation is a house made from bales of clothes, that we in Europe have worn and then given to charity for reuse – with the best and sometimes caring intentions. However, the circulation behind this is not only ecologically but also socially much more complicated than our journey to the clothing collection container. The walk-in installation «Return to Sender» vividly reveals the true extent of our uncontrolled consumption – but also our lack of knowledge and ignorance of its effects in the countries of the Global South.

The video, which is shown inside the installation, looks at the problematic journey of used clothing to Kenya from the perspective of various people involved. Up to 40 per cent of a bale of exported used clothing is completely unusable and has to be disposed of directly. At the same time, the remaining 60 per cent of usable clothing prevents the development of the domestic textile and fashion industry. The video of the Kenyan collective, which uses interviews with experts to pinpoint the economic and ecological complexity of this highly questionable business, bears the name «Delivery Details».
