Walid Raad
Artist Talk
Medusa, New YorkAfter 2018, Walid Raad returns to the Zürcher Theater Spektakel, this time with the exhibition «Cotton Under My Feet (The Zurich Chapter)» and the performance tour «Two Drops Per Heartbeat» at Kunsthaus Zürich.
Raad has been working between the visual and performing arts for over twenty years. He has received many international art awards and has exhibited at major international art exhibitions, such as documenta 11 and 13, various biennials, and in museum solo exhibitions, such as his comprehensive retrospective at MoMA in 2015. Walid Raad is professor of photography at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, in New York, USA.
In 1989, Raad initiated his long-term art project titled «The Atlas Group (1989-2004)» to research and document the contemporary history of Lebanon, with particular emphasis on the Lebanese wars. His work examines, among other things, how violence affects bodies, minds, art and tradition. In addition to his museum work, he has been involved in various activist initiatives such as «Gulflabour», committed to ensure that migrant worker rights are protected during the construction of museums, such as the Guggenheim and the Louvre in Abu Dhabi. Walid Raad talks to Matthias von Hartz about the creation of the exhibition and performance at the Kunsthaus as well as about the Thyssen Bornemisza collections and provide insights into older works.
