Most of it becomes public. Private collections are repeatedly lent or donated to museums. This is also true of Zurich. The artist Walid Raad examines the constellation of what was formerly private art, public interest and the museums that connect the two. In Madrid, he has developed the project «Cotton Under My Feet». It is based on the example of the Thyssen Collection, which was once at home in Switzerland and now has its own national museum in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. On the occasion of the Zürcher Theater Spektakel, Walid Raad is now developing
«The Zurich Chapter» at the Kunsthaus Zürich. With an exhibition and a walkthrough leading through the exhibition, he traces the winding paths of art through different eras and worlds. It is based on the example of the formerly private Thyssen Collection which moved from Switzerland to its own national museum in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.
Walid Raad is an attentive observer of the present. In his artistic projects, which have already been shown at prominent exhibition venues, such as documenta and MOMA, he repeatedly deals with the historical entanglements of power, artand war. In a mixture of research obsessed with detail, associative puzzle play and benevolent fictionalisation, Walid Raad opens up a unique, illuminating view of reality. (mvh
