Islam Elarabi
Just One Tile
Kairo«I come from a place where just one tile can be a stage» – this is how Egyptian choreographer and dancer Islam Elarabi describes his autobiographical solo «Just One Tile». In small spaces – underground, at weddings, in taxis, amidst crowds and protests – the popular music style Mahraganat emerged in the early 2000s as a powerful expression of a rebellious young generation and known as the «sound of the revolution» since the Arab Spring in 2011. Elarabi combines the movement vocabulary of Mahraganat with contemporary dance and demands respect for an art form that tells stories of control and freedom – and of fear, frustration, and euphoria.
