Eman Hussein
Smell of Cement
Cairo, ZurichIn her solo piece «Smell of Cement», choreographer and dancer Eman Hussein explores the movement sequences of workers she has observed on the many construction sites in her home city of Cairo. She sees the body as an immediate tool that has to withstand heat, cold, noise and other demands of the environment. Monotonous movements of repetitive activities serve the artist as a starting point for the dance piece. On a stage reminiscent of scaffolding, she addresses the balancing act of precarious employment, lack of insurance and the work-related separation from family, with which construction workers and dancers are equally confronted.
