Lola Arias returns to the Zürcher Theater Spektakel – with a play that lets us have a glimpse behind the walls of a prison. Arias has been researching and working in women’s prisons in her native Argentina for a few years now. The number of prisoners from precarious backgrounds – often serving time for drug smuggling – has risen sharply in recent years. During the pandemic, Lola Arias came across Caseros, a vacant prison in the south of Buenos Aires, and began to shoot a feature film with a cast of queer, female-read and trans people.

«Reas», a mix of documentary and musical film, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival this year. Lola Arias has since developed the material further with the same cast to create a captivating theatre play. «Los días afuera», meaning «The days out there», has become a sensual fusion of documentary, musical and dance theatre. The focus is on the experiences of those involved: How has their time in prison changed their lives? How has their return to their families and to society turned out? And how do they now imagine their future? An evening full of rousing emancipatory power that isboth inspiring and thought-provoking. (se)

Simple words

«Los días afuera» means «days in the open air» in Spanish.

Here it means: out of prison.

The play is a mix of theatre, musical and real-life stories.

On stage are women and trans people.

They were in prison in Argentina and tell their stories.

Now they are out and looking forward to their future.
