Nastaran Razawi Khorasani
Songs for no one
RotterdamThe phone rings. «What does freedom mean to you?» a voice asks. The woman on stage begins a telephone conversation with two children in Iran. They talk about computer games, fireworks, favourite songs, career aspirations and everyday school life during the coronavirus pandemic. They also repeatedly touch on topics such as freedom, courage and (self-)censorship with ease.
Based on those phone calls, Iranian-Dutch theatre maker Nastaran Razawi Khorasani has created an unforgettable performance, in which a boy and a girl talk about their lives. What does it mean to grow up in a dictatorship? What are their thoughts, hopes and dreams for the future?
Nastaran Razawi Khorasani, who fled Iran with her family as a child, stands on stage herself. She first paints the stage set and then herself with colour as she opens up a space for the voices and perspectives of her young interlocutors. Her performance is accompanied by captivating songs from her exchange with the children. (mr)
