Rébecca Chaillon
WHITEWASHING
Montreuil, Saint-LuceIn «WHITEWASHING», Rébecca Chaillon explores with poignant poetry and sophisticated humour the complex tensions faced by Black women in white societies. «Whitewashing» – a term describing various ways of rendering Black and PoC (People of Color) bodies invisible – is investigated by Rébecca Chaillon and performer Aurore Déon within the context of skin lightening, respectively the whitewashing of certain skin tones. As part of the piece «Carte Noire nommée Désir», the performance exposes forms of racism and sexism through powerful visual compositions. At its core lies the ambivalence between Chaillon’s role as a Black cleaner and the care of her own body and being within white structures.
Rébecca Chaillon, raised in northern France, meanwhile stands as one of the most important voices in European theatre and performance art. In her body art-focused work, Rébecca Chaillon, as an expert of her own life, shapes a political theatre and performance language dedicated to the realities of queer BIPoC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color) and Black women. «WHITEWASHING» appeals to everyone eager for a expressive and impactful theatre experience.
