Hagay Dreaming Cave

Hualien

An old legend of the indigenous Truku tribe in Taiwan tells of a hunter who was surprised by a sudden downpour while hunting. Thehunter found shelter in a tree hollow and fell into a deep sleep. In his dream, he encountered a group of fluid spirits, neither malenor female, who called themselves «Hagay». They imparted knowledge of rituals, hunting and weaving to the hunter.

Multimedia artist Shu Lea Cheang and Dondon Hounwn, artist and practising shaman of the Truku tribe, have created an artificial universe based on this partly traditional, partly invented narrative. In three different formats – a performance, a textile installation and a multimedia exhibition – the two collaborators explore the connections between queer lifestyles, shamanism and contemporary technology.

«Hagay Dreaming Cave»

The textile installation, reminiscent of a cave, invites visitors to gather and learn about the traditional craftsmanship of the fictional Hagay people. They are asked to donate their old jumpers in reference to a practice of the 50s and 60s when Western missionaries brought jumpers as gifts to the indigenous population of Taiwan. Instead of wearing them, they undid them into single threads andwove them into traditionally patterned clothes. In Zurich, the audience is invited to weave together with the artists. Stories from indigenous communities will be shared that transcend cultural and gender boundaries. (af)

«Hagay Dreaming Performance»

Don't miss the accompanying performance, a musical journey into the diversity of gender in the primal state, in which futuristic laser choreographies meet shamanistic dances.

«Hagay Dreaming Exhibition»

A multimedia exhibition with works by Dondon Hounwn, among others, will take place in the Shedhalle at the same time.

Simple words

«Living Gaya Dreaming Hagay» is an art project in three parts.

The «Hagay Dreaming Cave» takes place outdoors on the Landiwiese.

It is an installation made of woven cords that looks like a cave.

Inside, you can weave together with the artists, and listen to their stories.

If you want, you can bring an old sweater.

It will then be cut up and turned into new yarn.
